The Common European Framework
of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

The CEFR is the international benchmark for measuring language proficiency — used by universities, employers, and institutions worldwide. It defines six levels of ability, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery).

A1 — Beginner
Breakthrough

You can understand and use everyday familiar expressions and very basic phrases. You can introduce yourself and answer simple questions.

e.g. Can ask simple questions about a menu and understand simple answers.
A2 — Elementary
Waystage

You can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a direct exchange of information on familiar topics.

e.g. Can describe in simple terms your background and immediate environment.
B1 — Intermediate
Threshold

You can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an English-speaking country. You can express opinions and describe experiences.

e.g. Can ask to open an account at a bank, provided the procedure is straightforward.
B2 — Upper Intermediate
Vantage

You can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field.

e.g. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity with native speakers.
C1 — Advanced
Effective Operational Proficiency

You can express yourself fluently and spontaneously. You can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes.

e.g. Can deal with hostile questioning confidently and hold your turn to speak.
C2 — Mastery
Proficiency

You can understand virtually everything you hear or read. You can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely.

e.g. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments coherently.
